Economic Justice Australia has made recommendations to Treasury for the 2023–24 Federal Budget, calling for a number of reforms including:
- Permanently increase social security income support payment rates, and provide supplementary payments that reflect specific costs people face.
- Permanently abolish the newly arrived residents waiting period for Special Benefit, such that people in severe financial hardship have equitable access to the payment.
- Provide all New Zealand citizens living in Australia with access to Special Benefit.
- Extend the list of visa sub-classes that attract Special Benefit.
